The Butterworth Station is a major transit point for trains to and from Thailand to the north, and Kuala Lampur to the south, and on to Singapore. It is also the entry point to the island of Penang, portions of which are a UNESCO Heritage Site. The station adjoins the ferry terminal to the island.

Butterworth Station dates only from 1967, and at the time of this waymark in 2013, a new building was under construction. But, according to an article in The Star Online, this steam locomotive dates from 1936. It is on permanent display outside of the station along with an electric shunting engine.

This locomotive was one of many built by the North British Locomotive Company, and is one of several still preserved in Malaysia. The NBL Preservation Group describes this class of locomotive:

"The Class ‘O’ (or Class 56’s as they became known)were the ultimate development of the Malayan pacific, similar to the earlier classes 54 and 55, but with rotary cam poppet valve gear. As well as improving the steaming, this feature helped to reduce hammer blow on the lightweight track. These locos could be seen everywhere on the Malayan system, and were the last class of steam locomotives in service."
