This is possibly the coolest and most bare-bones tractor we've encountered on our Waymarking excursions.

Also, in all likelihood, the most rare, as no one seems to know much about the model and pictures seem nonexistent. This tractor is in an old shed toward the rear of Father Pandosy Mission, the first white settlement in the Okanagan Valley, begun in 1859. That would make this tractor just 49 years younger than its present home.
A best guess is that this is a Model "L", powered by a single cylinder
air cooled engine. The Model L apparently had a removable transport body, which appears to be missing from this unit. Also missing is part of the drive train, as there is no longer any connection between the engine and the driving axle. At the very least, a gear or two and a flat belt pulley would be in order.

Herbert Saunderson built his first tractor in Bedford, England, in 1904 after spending years working for Massey-Harris in Canada. Building two-, three-, and four-wheel models, Saunderson found great success with the model G tractor. Saunder was Britain's best-selling tractor until the arrival of the Fordson, which greatly reduced Saunderson sales at home and abroad. In 1924, Saunderson sold to Crossley Motors who built tractors under their brand for a few years before discontinuing production.

By 1910 the company name had changed to Saunderson & Gifkins, with a new partner providing much-needed financial support. Although the earlier designs were still being offered, several new tractors were also introduced, ranging from the little Model L with a single-cylinder air-cooled engine and removable transport body to the huge Model V with a four-cylinder power unit developing around 50 hp. In 1912 a new partner, Mr J. Gawler Mills, was found and the company name was again changed to Saunderson & Mills. It was around this time that the Model G tractor appeared, which was to prove Saunderson's most successful and long-lived model - one of these took first place in the agricultural trials at Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1913. By the First World War, Saunderson had become the largest tractor manufacturer outside the United States, and Saunderson tractors were being used on every continent.
