Das Moormuseum nennt sich auch "das Museum der Armut", denn die Lebensbedingungen der Siedler waren sehr schlecht. Vom Torfstechen konnten sie nicht leben, da es an (Wasser-)Transportwegen fehlte. Viele Siedler waren gezwungen, auf den Straßen von Emden zu betteln oder auszuwandern. Im Museumsgebäude gibt eine Ausstellung zur Siedlungsgeschichte mit historischen Kleidungsstücken. Der Außenbereich beinhaltet die Nachbauten von Siedlungshütten aus den letzten 200 Jahren, darunter die ersten torfgedeckten Erdhütten bis hin zu den späteren Lehmhütten, von denen einige bis 1924 bewohnt waren. Das Museum befindet sich auf dem originalen Gelände von Moordorf mitten im Moor. Es werden zahlreiche Mitmach-Aktivitäten zur Geschichtsvermittlung angeboten.
This fen museum is called "museum of poverty", too, because the last 200 years of colonialization was under very poor conditions. People tried to cut peat for a living, but there was no transportation so they can't sell it. Many fen people were forced to beg on the city streets of Emden or to emigrate into the US. The museum has a small in-house area with info boards and a larger open-air area with historic houses ranking from 200 years old hats out of peat to clay hats which were in use until 1924. The museum is located in the original fen of Moordorf. There are much activities offered for turning history lessons into an adventure during the year.
