This old Phillips 66 station is still used for an automotive use today. But in the days of Route 66, it was Adcock's Phillip's 66 station, offering gas and service to weary travelers in dusty Tucumcari NM.
From legacy.com, the obitiuary of the brother of the station's former owner, who worked here:
"Bobby Edward Adcock, 72, of Riverside, CA, died Wednesday evening in his home at 10:20 pm. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, September 2, at Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church in Riverside. Rev. Doug Metzger and Rev. Montia Setzler will be officiating.
Born on December 7, 1939, in Chariton, Iowa, to Clem and Alma Adcock, Bobby was the youngest of six brothers and one sister. In 1947, Bobby's family moved to Tucumcari, NM. The following years were filled with part-time work at his brother Bill's Phillips 66 station, school activities, choir, barbershop quartet, school plays, student government, honor society, and athletics.
Bob played all sports, excelling in football. In 1958, he received a football scholarship to attend Oklahoma State University. At OSU he met the love of his life, Coleen Gentry, whom he married on January 20, 1962.
After graduating Bob served two years in the U.S. Army. When his service concluded Bob took his bride west to Riverside, California to partner with his brother, Roy, to start Adcock Auto Supply.
On January 19, 1968, Bob and Coleen gave birth to their son, Joe. On August 17, 1971, they gave birth to their second son, Gary. Bob worked very hard with his brothers, Roy and Donald, establishing Adcock Auto Supply as a successful and respected business. Even with the demands of being a small business owner, Bob never missed one of the boys' ballgames along the way. He was a committed member of Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church where he served as deacon, trustee, and a small group leader.
Bob retired in December of 2001 and was diagnosed with cancer eight months later. Through his 8 1/2 year battle he never gave up and was able to enjoy wonderful God given moments with grandchildren, family and friends. Bob truly was a "friend to all" and a "stranger to no one".
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John, Paul, Bill, Donald, and Roy; one sister, Ada.
Bob is survived by his wife, Coleen; two sons and their wives, Joe and Tiffany and Gary and Mandy; four grandchildren, Tyler, Madison, Dalton, and Delaney; brother, Philip; and many nieces and nephews.
Plans for Bob to be buried at the Riverside National Cemetery are underway and the time and date of the graveside service will be announced at the memorial. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Bob Adcock Memorial Fund at California Baptist University."
