Nelson the Seal, died in 2003, five years later, his sculpture was unveiled by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE, who sailed around the World single handed, and honoured by a flypast by 849 Naval Air Squadron, How cool is that.

"This imposing and handsome outdoor work of art can be found on Pennyland Rocks in Looe harbour entrance and is a memorial to Nelson, a one-eyed, scarred, bull Grey Seal. Nelson was a familiar sight in the harbours of south Cornwall for over 25 years and eventually he made Looe Island his home and Looe harbour his dining room where he was fed and his company enjoyed by local fishermen, townsfolk and countless visitors for over 20 years. He was a "Grand Old Man of the Sea" and a great favourite with all. Sadly Nelson died in 2003 but such was his popularity that this life-size bronze sculpture by Suzie Marsh was placed on Pennyland Rocks and unveiled by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE on 28th May 2008. In addition to the unveiling ceremony the statue of Nelson was blessed and then honoured with a flypast by 849 Naval Air Squadron. RIP Nelson." Text Source: (visit link)

"For many years Looe had a popular & much-loved regular visitor to its harbour - a seal called Nelson (because he had lost one eye in an injury or accident). Sadly Nelson has gone to the great ocean in the sky but now he is fittingly commemorated by a handsome life-size statue in the harbour which was formally unveiled in 2008 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the famous sailor. Local sculptor Suzie Marsh gave her services in making the sculpture free of charge and the costs of casting and siting the bronze statue were met by grants and donations from many charitable and other bodies and individuals."
