South Road Bridge was used for many years by the Northern Central Railroad. The bridge is only one of two masonary arch bridges to incorporate both the use of stone and brick in its construction.
The bridge was built in 1871 by the Northern Central Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It appears that the bridge may have been updated with hand-rails on both sides of the bridge.
The bridge was built as a result of the widening of the railroad in order to lay a second set of tracks between York Pennsylvania, and Baltimore Maryland.
Since the railroad has gone out of business many years ago, today the bridge/railroad bed is used as a rail-trail for the Heritage Rail Trail County Park.
Bridge is owned by Local Government.
