Chain-eating tree on the FLT

Hiking the Finger Lakes Trail, you will encounter omnivorous trees from time to time. This one caught my eye along Mitchellsville Creek in Steuben County.

A length of chain is deeply buried in this tree (I didn't think to identify the species). The nub of a link protrudes from the bark, but no sign of the original screw or anchor.
