Lucius Munatius Plancus (87 BC - 15 BC) was a Roman consul, senator and military leader. The funerary inscription on his mausoleum in Gaeta attests that he founded the cities of Augusta Raurica (44 BC) and Lyon (43 BC).

Although there is little evidence of this on site, the possibility of this heritage was very welcome to the humanist spirit of the 16th century, even the fact that Augusta Raurica is 20 kilometers from Basel could not prevent the city authorities from adopting Plancus as the founder of Basel.

The statue was created by Hans Michael from Strassbourg in 1580. It is located in the inner court of the city hall of Basel. It is a colored life-size stone statue on a high pedestal. Plancus wears a golden Roman commander uniform, according to the imagination of the 16th century.
