As new counties were formed from Brunswick County, the county seat kept moving to try and keep it near the geographic center of the new county boundaries. Most locals had to visit the "courthouse" (county seat) at least once a year and more often in some cases. It was necessary to locate it so that, ideally, it would be no more than a day's travel from any point in the county.
The marker text reads:
OLD BRUNSWICKCOURTHOUSE
------
HERE THE FIRST COURTHOUSE OF BRUNS-
WICK COUNTY WAS BUILT ABOUT 1732.
IN 1746, WHEN THE COUNTY WAS DIVIDED,
THE COUNTY SEAT WAS MOVED EAST NEAR
THOMASBURG. IN 1783, AFTER GREENS-
VILLE COUNTY HAD BEEN FORMED, THE
COURTHOUSE WAS MOVED TO LAWRENCEVILLE.
