Saint Ignatius Catholic Cemetery is located in Lake County with approximately 1,525 interments.

There is one section for nuns. There are 35 interments that were between 1845 and 1899. Peter Zerbinatti was the first priest to die in Montana.

"Father Zerbinatti came to the Rocky Mountains in the summer of 1844, a little over a year before his death. He was assigned to St. Mary's as companion and assistant to Father Mengarini and applied himself to the study of the Indian language, in which he became proficient. On September 1845, being missed, he was found to have drowned. His death was serious loss for the Mission.

He was the first priest to die in Montana, and he was buried at St. Mary's, where his remains lay 25 years. With the help of Indians, who had assisted at the father's funeral and asserted that they knew the exact spot of his grave, the body was exhumed by two priests and brought to St. Ignatius.

As no indication was ever discovered by which it could be ascertained that the remains were really Father Zerbinatti's, their identity has been a matter of doubt, even by the two Fathers who disinterred them.

Those remains, nine years after being moved, were placed in the same grave with the body of Father Joseph Specht, the same day that the latter was laid to rest in the cemetery in St. Ignatius, Lake County, Montana - June 19, 1884. They had been lying in a corner of the sacristy, apparently forgotten until then."

The Enterprise, Harlem, MT, 23 July 1914

Noted Plainsman is Dead
Michael Pablo, formerly the owner of the largest herd of buffalo on the American continent and one of the most picturesque figures of Western Montana, died suddenly at his ranch near Ronan. Burial services were held at the old mission church at St. Ignatius and burial was in the ancient Indian cemetery close to the mission.

Pablo was one of the most successful stockmen of Montana and his herds were known all over the western part of the state. All of Pablo's buffalo, with the exception of the wild bulls, were purchased by the Canadian government and shipped to the government park at Banff. Through this purchase Pablo jumped into into prominence in consequence of efforts to keep his famous buffalo herd in the United States.
