Josephus Somerville Irvine, son of Josephus and Jane (Patton) Irvine, was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, on August 25, 1819. He died on May 19, 1876, and is buried at Wilson's Chapel Cemetery in Newton County.

Born August 25, 1819. Came to Texas in 1830. Soldier in the Battle of San Jacinto. Major in Spaight's Eleventh Texas Regiment, C.S.A. Chaplain of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. 1860. Died May 19, 1876. Erected by the State of Texas, 1962
