Of rough hewn granite, this is a sturdy cross of simple form set on a three step octagonal plinth and is the central object on the small village green, The Street, in Messing, about three miles north of Tiptree in Essex. It is outside and opposite the gate into the church yard. The cross-arms bear the dates 1914 and 1919, whilst there is the Essex County badge centrally between them. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the main shaft on a smoothed panel. Below this is a second smooth panel with just two names, those of two villagers who died in the Second World War.
