Only 50 miles long, SPRING RIVER (fishing, float trips). which US 63 follows south from Mammoth Spring, is noted for its great natural beauty. Shoals and spray-edged rapids alternate with deep clear pools. Rainbow trout thrive in the upper part of the river, attracting fly-fisherman from afar. Several dirt roads branch (R) from US 63 to vantage points to the river.

Text of signage from the dam located at the origin of the Spring River:

"You are standing at the headwater of the Spring River.

Not only has the spring provided a source of power for the city of Mammoth Spring, it is a source of recreation for many outdoor enthusiasts.

The 9.78 million gallons of water that flows over this dam every hour makes the Spring River one of the most consistent float streams in the state. The cool 58 degree water id ideal for rainbow trout. As the river flows toward Hardy, it warms, making it more conductive to walleye and smallmouth bass.

Map insert - Fed by the tenth largest spring in the world, the Spring River joins the Black River 57 miles to the Southeast."
