Amalienborg consists of a complex of four palaces symmetrically arranged around a octagonal plaza called the Amalienborg Slotsplads. The palaces are: Christian VII's Palace, Christian VIII's Palace, Frederick VIII's Palace, and Christian IX's Palace. A central bronze equestrian statue by Jacques-Francois-Joseph Saly depicts King Fredrick V. Amalienborg is continuously guarded Royal Life Guards who wear red or black jackets, blue trousers and bearskin caps.

The view on the stamp is towards the southeast with the equestrian statue of King Fredrick V on the left, King Christian IX's palace on the right and the Royal Life Guards in formation. Construction of this palace began in 1750 under the supervision of architects Christian Josef Zuber and later Philip de Lange. Christian IX's Palace has been the home of the royal couple since 1967.

The stamp was issued by Denmark in 1994 as part of a set of four stamps depicting Danish castles.
