A Masonic compass and square note that Mr. Allen was a Mason, and there is this inscription: L.G. Allen, Born Dec. 20, 1827, Died July 9, 1886 We only know that thou hast gone, And that the same relentless tide Which bore thee from us, still glides on And we who mourn thee with it glide The second face features a set of clasped hands, denoting a successful marriage, and on the base is a cross with roses. The third face features a sheaf of wheat, and a crown on the base, perhaps suggesting victory over death at harvest time. The fourth face features a psychopompos and a wreath on the base.
