Marshall Field was born in Conway, attended Pumpkin Hollow school and worked in a Pittsfield MA store. He left for Chicago when he was 21. He became a partner in a large mercantile house and eventually founded the Marshall Field and Co. Fields selected the site for the library in 1899. On July 13, 1901 the dedication ceremony was held for the opening of the library. He presented the deed, an endowment and the keys to the trustees right after his short speech.
