In Needham, at the intersection of Highland Avenue, May Street, and Chapel Street, is the Eaton Funeral Home.

The funeral home is located on the northwest corner of the intersection, in a white building with black shutters. Off to the right side (facing the front) there is an overhang over the driveway. There is a sign in the front. In the winter, there is often a sleigh in the lawn, by the garden.

The family business started in 1818 when William Eaton, trained as a carpenter, was asked to build a coffin for a resident of town. Over the years, he became involved in arranging funerals for friends. Though not truly acting as a funeral director, his actions began a general progression to establishing the family business. His son, George, took on funerals, but his primary work was insurance. His son, Alger E. Eaton, continued the business, adding livery service to the family and included a hearse. He was also the first in the family to be licensed - receiving license No. 191. Today, the Eaton family, now in their 5th generation, still runs the business. Thus, the web site for the funeral home claims that this business is one of the oldest funeral directorships in the United States.

A building on the present property was purchased in 1928 for use to hold funerals. The building has been greatly expanded over the years. Later, they acquired the McKay Funeral Home in Newton and now operate two homes.
