"Devil Dancer" was created in 1979 by Gary Slater, who received his MFA from ASU. It is made of Corten steel, and is an abstract sculpture intended to evoke associations with the local desert phenomenon of the dust devil, also called the "sun devil," the mascot of Arizona State University. It consists of two curved pieces of steel joined together, meant to look like swirls of wind and sand.
Movement is central to the artist's conception because of the association with dust devils, so the sculpture is intended to move when a breeze is blowing, just like its real life inspiration. It can also be spun manually by the viewer spinning its base.
