In November 1987,
86 trees were planted
here to commemorate local
people who died in the Second
World War, with a service of
dedication conducted by the
Maldon Council of Churches.
Additional trees were planted
between 1988 and 1992 to
complete the horseshoe avenue.
On 11th November 2002,
a service of re-dedication
was held.
A commemorative stone
marks this event.
The Memorial Avenue provides
a link between the Delph Ditch
Conservation Area and the
River Blackwater.
It offers a pleasant
and shady area in which
to walk and enjoy the surroundings.
So says the dedication on the interpretive sign by the north-west entrance to the avenue. It also carries 87 names, the original 86 and one later addition. At the foot of the sign are the words: "They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them."
The re-dedication service in 2002 was marked by the placing of a stone with this plaque just infront of the main sign. It reads:-
