This NRHP application covers two structures. The Comal Hotel (1) and the Klein-Kuse House (2) stand together on a half-acre lot in the center of New Braunfels.
The hotel was built around the turn of the 19th century at 295 E. San Antonio Street at corner with Market Street. The NRHP document cites 1900-1901, while other sources, including the Texas historical marker application (Secondary Website 1 link below) states 1898-1899 as the time of construction. The hotel is a two-story building with full basement; it is rectangular in shape and has a central-hall plan. The dozen rooms, primarily on the second floor, did not include modern features such as clothes closets and private bathrooms - with hand basins and chamber pots provided for hygiene. In the 1950s, the hotel was sold outside the Eggeling family and upgreaded with these amenities and electrical wiring. In the 1970s, air conditioning was installed. The Prince Solms Inn is now operated in a bed & breakfast arrangement. (Secondary Website 2 link below)
Meanwhile, the Klein-Kuse House was originally located where the hotel now sits, but moved 100 ft to the north in 1897 (Waymark WMKP0M) to become 135 N. Market Street. The simple rectangular cottage was built around 1852 as a gabled salt-box having a corrugated tin roof and a single chimney. Exterior walls are weatherboarded over Fachwerk construction, typical for the German craftsman. Family of William Kuse, a shoemaker, were the residents for nearly a century until the overall property was sold.
