In Newton, across the street from the Newton City Hall, is this sculpture titled "Julia M. First."

The sculpture is located on the front lawn of the library, on the west side of a brick plaza in front of the entrance to Homer Street. It is also near a small pond.

The sculpture depicts a girl in a baseball cap, walking briskly while reading a book in her right hand. In her left hand is a bag. The feet are set wide apart and the body is leaning forward, indicating that she is walking briskly. The straps of the bag reach the ground. She is wearing a jacket, shorts, shoes and socks. At the time of visit, two knitted scarves were also placed on the sculpture (other knitted items such as lamp 'cozies' were placed around the property).

The plaque on the ground has the following:

"In memory of
Julia M. First
Author of children's literature
by her loving family
1996"

I could find nothing on the person on the internet, so I'm not sure what books may have been published.

The sculptor mark is on the straps, near the ground.
