In Newton, in a brick plaza next to the Newton Public Library, is a group of statues with A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore in a scene entitled, "Winnie-the-Pooh and the Hunny pot."

The statue composition is located on the east side of the library, in a brick area just outside a side door to the library, and partially shaded with bushes to provide some privacy from the road, but easily visible from the road.

There are four pieces: Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and the "Hunny pot." The three characters are contemplating the pot. There is also a plaque with the following:

"Winnie-the-Pooh and the Hunny Pot
For the children of Newton
from Sarah Oliver

Nancy Shoen, Sculptor
2002"

The figures are in the style that is more similar to the original illustrations in A. A. Milne's books done by E. H. Shepard. They are closer in appearance to stuffed animals than the "Disnified" version. For one, "Pooh bear" doesn't have a shirt in the statue.

A. A. Milne was the creator of these and other characters such as "Roo," "Rabbit," and "Owl," which were based on his son's stuffed animals. "Pooh-bear" was the lovable but often dimwitted teddy bear. Piglet was the nervous but also often brave little pig. Eeyore was the dower but content donkey. The first appearance was in a poem in 1924 titled, "When We were Very Young." The stories were compiled in two books, "Winnie-the-Pooh," (1926) and "House at Pooh Corner" (1928). Since then, there have been many adaptations (especially Disney), translations (including the only Latin work to make it on the New York Time's Best Sellers), and merchandise.

Pooh-bear's weakness was "hunny." There are a few tales involving hunny in either a pot or in a tree-in a bee hive.

This was a pleasant find in a peaceful setting.
