A biopic about the life of Mary Queen of Scots from the death of her husband, Francis II of France, to her death by execution.

Mary’s return to Scotland after her husband’s death was opposed by Queen Elizabeth I and by protestants in Scotland, and her half brother James Stewart had designs on the throne. Elizabeth sent Robert Dudley to Scotland to marry Mary, but Lord Darnley beat him to it. Darnley, being from a powerful catholic family, was not popular.

Mary soon becomes disillusioned with Darnley and drops him in favour of David Riccio. Riccio had been Darnley’s lover and is persuaded by Scottish lords to kill Riccio. Mary flees to the safety of Lord Bothwell and falls in love with him. Darnley is killed in an explosion and Bothwell marries Mary. It is not enough however to assuage a leading protestant Scottish lord, Lord Moray. Moray forces Mary to abdicate and go into exile. Mary’s son James will eventually be King of Scotland, but in the meantime Moray will be the power behind the throne.

Mary flees to England and asks Elizabeth for money and an army to regain her throne. Instead Elizabeth takes Mary prisoner. Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth’s advisor, finds evidence that Mary, in captivity, has been involved in a conspiracy to kill Elizabeth. Elizabeth will spare Mary if she publicly begs for forgiveness. Mary refuses and is executed.
