White Bronze marker for Mary Collier, located in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Newton County, IN

This is the only Zinc or White Bronze marker we could find in this smaller cemetery, by the side of US 41, north of Kentland, in Newton County, Indiana. According to Find A Grave (visit link) it has 600 interments.

The headstone or marker includes the following inscriptions:-

Our Mother
Gone but not forgotten,
Mary Collier
Born May 22, 1824,
Departed this life
Oct. 12, 1897,
Aged 73 Years, 5 Mo's, 7 Days.

----
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled,

God in his wisdom has recalled,
The boon his live has given,
And though the body slumbers her,
The soul is safe in Heaven.

Her memorial is placed next to a stone marker for James A. Collier, who died Sept. 2, 1904. I assume this was Mary's husband.

Kentland is the county seat of Newton County, Indiana. Newton County is located on the western border of Indiana, adjoining Iroquois County, Illinois. It is south of Chicago, in Illinois and Hammond, in Indiana. Newton County is included in the Chicago metropolitan area. As of the 2010 Census, there were 14, 244 people living in Newton County.

The original Newton County was formed by statute on February 7, 1835, and was a roughly square area some 30 miles on a side, encompassing what is now the northern half of the county, the northern half of Jasper County, and a large section to the north. The northern border was cut back to the Kankakee River on February 1, 1836, with all land north of the Kankakee River going to Lake and Porter counties. The county was abolished and combined with Jasper County in 1839. On December 8, 1859, the county was re-created and the borders were redrawn to essentially their current state. Newton County is named after Sgt. John Newton, who served under Gen. Francis Marion (the "Swamp Fox") in the American Revolutionary War. Upon its re-creation, Newton County was the last county to be organized in Indiana.
