Horse drawn steam engine used as portable power source for saw mill to cut locally grown black walnut lumber. Black walnut lumber was one of the dawn settlement's major exports. In 1851, on the first of Josiah Henson's "Uncle Tom" trips to England, he transported and displayed four polished black walnut boards at the World's fair in London. He hoped to develop a British market for lumber produced at the settlement. Henson was awarded a bronze medal for the exhibit.
