Grand Teton Range, William Henry Jackson, 1878
William Henry Jackson was an early photographer of the American West, as well as an accomplished artist. He traveled the Oregon-California Trail in 1866 and 1867, and accompanied the 1871 US Territorial Survey Expedition, lead by Dr. F.V. Hayden.
Jackson was the first to photograph the Grand Teton Range in 1872. Since pictures had to be developed on site, he had to carry glass plates, chemicals and a dark room tent across the mountains.
Today’s challenges are different. Armed with a 6.1 mp Kodak EasyShare, taking pictures is not a problem anymore. Jackson took his picture from a place now called Jackson Point Overlook. Trees have grown significantly since 1871 and the view from the overlook is now quite obstructed. So (as you can see in the map) we had to hike around a little bit before we found a spot from which one could still see all four major mountains, Grand Teton, Mt. St. John, Mt. Woodring and Mt. Moran (from left to right) in one picture. |
