The Parish Church - Eglwys Dewi Sant (translates to St Davids Church). A listed building retaining substantial mediaeval fabric in the body and tower. Located in the tiny picturesque village of Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire, South Wales.

Eglwys Dewi Sant (also known as Church of St David, Church of St Arthneu or St Arthney).

"The church is thought to have taken the place of an earlier one nearer to the Towy River, where the name Llan is recorded. The tower, nave and chancel are perhaps of 13th Century origin; the primitive character and considerable projection of the tower gargoyles suggest the C13. The church was much enlarged in the late C15 or the C16 by the addition of a south aisle, which was given a separate doorway in its west wall. In the north face of the nave externally there is an inscribed stone dated 1682, apparently recording some extensive rebuild or repair; it displays the initials of six persons. The arcade separating the nave and south aisle was removed in 1826 and a single roof spanning from north wall to south wall was formed, with a flat ceiling overall; this created a pre-ecclesiological conventicle type of interior (as at Llannon church). In later restorations the windows of the nave and the east window were restored; the stained glass of the east window is dated 1865. The interior was re-pewed. The rainwater heads of the chancel are dated 1873. A cross of the C10 or C11, which had been found in a field in the parish and subsequently used as a stile in the churchyard wall, was brought into the porch for preservation and display." "St David's Church is medieval in origin, and is depicted as St Arthen's church on historic Ordnance survey mapping. It is situated within a curvilinear churchyard, adjacent to the Afon Gwynon. The churchyard is enterd via a lychgate in its southern boundary, which borders the B4300. During the medieval period the church was a chapelry in the deanery of Stradtowy, and belonged to the Bishops of St David's as a prebend of the collegiate church at Brecon. In 1290 the prebend was appropraiated to the prior of the Knights Hospitaller by Bishop Beck. According to Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Wales, in 1844 there were two chapels of ease to St David's Church. One was noted to be in ruins, and the other occupied by dissenters. Capel Herbach (NPRN 100629) is thought to be one of these chapels. A twelfth century wheel-cross, known as the 'Cross of Elmat', is built into the ground floor of the tower but is not in situ. It is thought to have been removed from nearby Cae'r Castell. Fragments of Early Christian Monument stones are thought to be built into the churchyard wall." Text Source: (visit link)
