St. Mark's Episcopal Church--Lappans built in 1849 is located only six miles from the  Battle of Antietam, one of the bloodiest of the war, and served as a field hospital in September 1862.  It also served in that role again for a brief period following the Battle of Gettysburg.  It was only in September 1862 that services have not been conducted in the church for a month since its construction.  For more history about the church see the church's website.
