The staircase was opened in 1887. It is insofar important part because it was mainly used by dock workers on the way to and from work. The workers were employed in the adjoining timber port, which is considered the oldest docks in Hamburg. The workers lived mainly in heavily built-up residential areas in the Upper Town or directly at the ferry dock.
