Sitting near Coachella City Hall is a water trough and historical plaque which reads:

This water trough was constructed
on the Southern Pacific Railroad
property along Cantaloup Avenue for
watering teams of horses hauling
cantaloups and onions. It replaced a
wooden trough on Front Street used
in the early industry of shipping
mesquite wood. The first name of
this area was "Woodspur".

This is the second historic water trough I've come across in California. I've waymarked another trough with historical placard that can be visited here.
