Penny is married to Harry Wells, a crooked businessman. Penny is mentally unstable and kills an intruder in her cottage. Harry recognises the intruder as a business rival, Charles Willoughby. Harry burys the body in the woods and the pair clean up the cottage.
Penny keeps seeing Willoughby and it slowly drives her insane. She tries seeing a medium and an Indian swarmy, all to no avail. In the end she shoots herself with Harry’s gun. It turns out that Charles Willougby is not dead, but a collaborator, along with the psychic, in Harry’s scheme to get his hands on Penny’s money. Penny has the last say, however. Her ghost comes back to the cottage and sets fire to the money.
