After hearing Anthony Eden on the radio talking about the Local Defence Volunteers, Captain Mainwaring goes to the local police station to volunteer, only to find chaos. He decides to act and registers the volunteers in the church hall. After many mishaps with home made devices the platoon eventually get uniforms and become organised into the home guard.

The platoon get involved in a weekend training exercise with disastrous consequences. A runaway steam roller wrecks their tents and equipment. Following this they oversleep and miss out on holding a pontoon bridge. Major General Fullard recommends that Captain Mainwaring be replaced.

On the way back from the exercises a German plane is shot down. The crew enter the church hall and take the mayor, vicar and occupants prisoner. Mainwaring and his men realise that there is a hostage situation and decide to get into the church via the crypt. They enter the church dressed as choristers and confront the Germans with their guns. The Germans surrender and the platoon earns the praise of the town and Major General Fullard.
