Located at the NW corner of the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) campus is a newer native plant garden that was developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, OIT and volunteers from the Schoolyard Habitat Program. This native garden comprises a zigzagging rock path that meanders up a hill and there are placards along the way that focus on specific native plants and trees that make up this garden.

This particular placard highlights the Mixed Conifers Community that exists here in the Klamath Basin. Some of the most common trees found in this habitat in the Klamath Basin include the ponderosa, lodgepole and Jeffrey pines, Douglas and white fir, incense cedar and western hemlock. There are also native flowering plants that produce berries that the Native Americans and settlers of old used to pick and eat.

You can learn more about the projects the Schoolyard Habitat Program provides by visiting their website here and here.
