The Accidental Tourist is a statue of an ancient piece of “nature”, resembling either a rock or a tree stump arriving in modern-day Stellenbosch with two suitcases.

The plaque reads:

STRIJDOM VAN DER MERWE
Accidental Tourist

In this sculpture, nature takes on the unfamiliar role of a tourist on a visit to Stellenbosch. He has come to see what we have done and accidentally finds himself lost on a street corner in his own world created by man. If we continue distancing ourselves from nature we are in danger of losing our sense of balance.

This work was originally created for the exibition 20 Stellenbosch: Two decades of South African sculpture (2011/2012). It was gifted to the town as a permanent display by the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust and the artist.
