The Archbishops Palace is metioned in the Doomsday book as land held by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry VII stayed here in 1507, and later Henry VIII stayed in 1520 and 1544.

Henry VIII was given the palace by Archbishop Cranmer. Eventually it was sold by Charles 1 in 1629. In 2004, the Archbishop's Palace was one of the featured buildings, and a finalist, in the BBC/Endemol TV series Restoration.

The plaque on the outside wall reads

"Archbishops Palace Manor House was visited by Henry VII in 1507 & Henry VIII in 1520 & 1544. 1545 given to Henry VIII by archbishop Cranmer. 1629 sold by Charles 1"
