Dnešní nárožní areál paláce Chlumeckých, který byl postaven v 50. letech 19. století na míste puvodne ctyr stredovekých meštanských domu, má svou dlouhou a bohatou historii. Už od 14. století se totiž v onech ctyrech domech nacházeli mezi jejich majiteli a obyvateli i bohatí vlastníci cihelny ci sladovny, ale bydleli tu také napr. krejcí, pekari, rezníci, mydlári a ševci, ba i nekteré rodiny šlechtické.V roce 1852 se do nových prostor nastehovala Obchodní a živnostenská komora. Na sklonku 19. století sem z Behounské ulice presídlila celá redakce a vydavatelství Lidových novin.
