This stone marker is on the north east side of the High Street and a few paces south east of where the bridge crosses the River Stour.

The inscription on the Portland stone post tells us:

For the greater safety
and convenience
of passengers
this bridge was widened
10 feet in the year 1769
Joseph Royle Esq
being Mayor the expence
was supplied by
voluntary contributions
from this city
and its neighbourhood
55 miles 6 furlongs
from London Bridge

The bridge is a Grade II* listed building with the entry at the English Heritage website telling us:

Built on Mediaeval foundations. 2 spans stone with stone voussoirs and a stone parapet on one side. Dated 1734 under the parapet. A stone records that the bridge was widened 10 ft in the year 1769.
