"Linhas de Torres" were hundred and a half fortifications build by the Portuguese and their English allies used to defend Lisbon from the French invasions.
Both plaques are embeded in the base of the monument.
1 - "Á memória de J.Fletcher" - English military engineer Lt. Col. John Fletcher responsable for the execution of the fortifications.
2 - "Á memória de J.M das Neves Costa" - Renowned Portuguese military engineer, stood out for their brilliant and innovative work on behalf of military cartography, particularly in surveying and configuration of land. It was the case here, we did the terrain studies that allowed the forts implementation.
