The historic Janssen Building at 422 First Street in Eureka, California. Built in 1875, the building was planned as the mercantile center of the North Coast area. The two-story Victorian Italianate style building is 34 feet wide along First Street by 110 feet long and is constructed of brick. It also featured the first elevator in Eureka. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 16, 1973. It is also a contributing structure in the Eureka Historic District which was placed on the National Register on October 15, 1991. Since 1998, Humboldt State University has operated the First Street Gallery in the building.
