The Church of St.Augustine in Draycott-in-the-Clay is unusual, it was constructed of corrugated iron on a cast metal frame in the late C19th as 'a temporary church' but, like many of its contemporaries, it has survived and is still in regular use by a faithful congregation. The parish of Draycott is in a combined benefice with St.Werburgh's, Hanbury in the Diocese of Lichfield and holds a fortnightly Sunday service, normally at 9.00am.

This type of church was available from a number of suppliers and could be ordered from a catalogue, specifying number of windows, bell tower etc. This one only seats about 40 people and at the time would have cost between £2 and £4 per place, a total cost of between £80 and £160. They were erected in an age when the population was clamouring for religion. Many were meant to be merely temporary, until the funds had accrued that would pay for brick and stone, and some have been left standing alongside the brick and stone churches which superseded them, as a church hall, scout hall, community hall or church offices. Yet others are now in use by non-mainstream evengelical sects, but most have gone the way of unwanted and unloved buildings and passed into the history books.

Should you wish to read more about these Tin Tabernacles there is a book by Ian Smith called 'Tin Tabernacles: Corrugated Iron Mission Halls, Churches and Chapels of Britain'. Ian is based in Pembroke and the book has been published by the Camrose Organisation of Pembroke. A new book is also available, Tin Tabernacles Postcard Album priced £12.99 plus £2.00 UK P&P from Camrose.

The church at Draycott has been lined out with highly polished wooden wall panels and has full heating, it only recently lost its bell cote which was graced by a cross, one of the gallery pictures shows it as it was, and it appeared to have its bell and cote as recently as 2011.
