Located at the entrance to the City of Susanville Airport are three military aircraft static displays including a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter jet, a Bell UH-1H Huey helicopter and a Bell AH-1F Cobra helicopter. This military helicopter is a U.S. Army UH-1H Huey, based off the serial plate I located on the pilot side of the aircraft.
This particular airframe is a Model 205 UH-1H. The most important variant of this model was an updated version of the UH-1D with a 1400 hp T53-L-13 engine. 4900 units of this model were built for the US Army and 50 countries.
I researched the serial no. of this airframe and found some surprising info. This helicopter served in Vietnam in 1967, shortly after going into service and was shot at by small arms, causing damage to the passenger side cargo area. I found a weblink to the history of this airframe here. This helo went on to serve with numerous other units before retiring here.
