Chinatown Stone Lions - Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - Gifts from Other Countries on Waymarking.com

Victoria and Suzhou became sister cities in July 1980. To celebrate this event, the two cities exchanged gifts. Victoria gave Suzhou 5000 daffodil bulbs, two of the Victoria's trademark lamp posts and a totem pole. In return, Suzhou gave Victoria a Chinese painting, a piece of reversible Suzhou embroidery and these two stone lions. The lions were placed on display in front of the Gate of Harmonious Interest in the heart of Victoria's Chinatown, the oldest in Canada and the second oldest in North America. The male lion on the left and the female on the right signify the balance of yin and yang.
A plaque mounted on the pedestal of the left lion reads as follows:
