1945: Atomic bombing of Hiroshima: A United States B-29 Superfortress, the Enola Gay, drops an atomic bomb, codenamed "Little Boy", on Hiroshima, Japan, at 8:15 a.m. (local time).
1955: First edition of the Guinness Book of Records is published, in London.
1965: Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang appear on the cover of Time.
1975: U.S. President Ford posthumously restores the U.S. citizenship of General Robert E. Lee, leader of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.
1985: South Africa ends its ban on interracial marriages.
1997: India's Missionaries of Charity chooses Sister Nirmala to succeed Mother Teresa as its leader.
