Whoever made this hand-inscribed local limestone tombstone made sure to record Mr. Billups' Confederate Army service. It's a shame that they chose shallow carving in local limestone -- the spalling over the years has destroyed the engraved layer, making this stone very hard to read.
The tombstone reads as follows:
"W. S. BILLUPS
Co.-A V[illeg]
V[olunteers?]
Born
AD 18[34?]
Died Nov 15th
AD 1895"
Blasterz think W. S. Billups was from Virginia (the letter V after the Co. A) and served in a CSA military unit from that state.
A Walter S Billups is listed in the 1870 US Census as living in a boarding house in Houston. He was single, working as a lawyer. He was born in Virginia in 1841. We cannot say that this is the same W. S. Billups as is buried here, but that sure is intriguing.
Date of Birth: ca 1835-1840
Date of Death: 15 Nov 1895
