1898: Novelist Émile Zola's open letter to the President of the French Republic on the Dreyfus affair, J'accuse, is published on the front page of the Paris daily newspaper L'Aurore
1908: Japanese emigration to the United States is forbidden under terms of the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907.
1918: "Spanish 'flu" becomes pandemic. Over 30 million people die in the following 6 months.
1928: Charles Lindbergh is presented the Medal of Honor for his first Transatlantic flight.
1938: Oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia.
1948: 1948 Winter Olympics open in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
1958: The 30th Academy Awards ceremony takes place; The Bridge on the River Kwai wins seven awards, including Academy Award for Best Picture.
1968: Daniel Cohn-Bendit ("Danny The Red") and 7 other students occupy the administrative offices of the University of Nanterre, setting in motion a chain of events that lead France to the brink of revolution in May.
1978: The 1978 FIFA World Cup starts in Argentina.
1988: Gallaudet University, a university for the deaf in Washington, D.C., elects Dr. I. King Jordan as the first deaf president in its history. This conclusion of the Deaf President Now campaign is a turning point in the deaf civil rights movement.
