I spoke to the proprietor of the Spear Fishing & Snorkeling business which occupies a shop in the building. Although he was unaware of the building's history my research revealed that the original owner was newsagent Thomas McCann.

Thomas McCann was a founding member of a friendly society - The Independent Order of Rechabites which was formed in 1927. Mr McCann was also a member of the Port Kembla Progress Association. Thomas McCann is mentioned in the book - Steel Town: The Making and Breaking of Port Kembla by Erik Carl Eklund which I found on the following site:
