The Ottawa Muslim Association was established in 1966. Their prayer facility, the Ottawa Main Mosque, was constructed in 1977. The mosque has capacity for 500 people with a prayer hall for men on the main floor and an upper level for women. Basement facilities are also available. Following traditional mosque construction, the Ottawa Mosque includes a minaret and a raised central dome. Though listed in the buildings inventory of the Ontario Heritage Trust, this building is not subject to conservation protection.
