Jonesboro is a small southern Illinois town, heavily Democratic in the 1850s. Douglas arrived by carriage, while Lincoln walked, looking in deep meditation. During the Civil War, the town had mixed loyalties, with strong southern sympathies yet many serving in the Union Army. The local paper was closed by the militia for anti-war editorials.
The marker stands along the edge of the square where the county courthouse once stood.
