Odell Lake occupies a glacially scoured bedrock basin dammed by glacial moraine deposits. The lake is at an elevation of 4787 feet and with a surface area of 3582 acres is one of the largest lakes in the Oregon Cascades. The lake receives water from a 37 square mile drainage basin. The largest tributary is spring-fed Trapper Creek.
Odell Lake was named for William Holman Odell who came to Oregon from Indiana in 1852. He was involved in the surveying of the military wagon road from Eugene to southern Idaho and in 1871 became the surveyor general for Oregon.
