The Patience Latting Library honors a scholarly and gifted former mayor of Oklahoma City. In front of the library on N.W. 122nd Street stands this sculpture of the State Fossil of Oklahoma, the Saurophaganax Maximus. His name is taken from Greek words - "sauros" for lizard; "phagein" to eat; and "anax" ruler, or "lizard-eating master". These creatures grew to a length of 35-40 feet and weighed about 3 tons.
In 1931, a skeleton of this creature was found in Cimarron County, Oklahoma. A skeleton of this dinosaur can be seen in Jurassic Hall at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.
The sculptor, Solomon Bassoff-Faducci, has added a comical touch to his sculpture by depicting him in unlaced tennis shoes, with a stack of books on various types of insects. The sculpture is not metallic and is in color. A bronze plaque on the base reads:
Saurophaganax maximus
